How did this story start?
In 2018, I started to work at the world-leading game company Electronic Arts. EA was the most successful company I had worked for at that time. I remember I was super nervous for a few months because of my impostor syndrome. All my colleagues and managers were really awesome and nice to me, but I always felt I was not good enough to perform well. Sometimes, my body physically reacted in destructive ways- fast heart beating with no reason, fever, dizziness, nausea and so on. After experiencing intense emotional swings and having some time to resolve the problems myself, I genuinely wanted to share my impostor syndrome experiences in creative ways. I hope this story is also helpful for someone who’s been through a similar situation.
Story Exploration
Originally, I envisioned the character as a junior fashion designer and even created a pitch deck to shape the story. It was a fun exploration, but something about it didn’t feel quite real. So, I decided to make Max a story artist instead—drawing from my own personal experiences to make the story more authentic and engaging. Looking back, I’m really happy with how it all came together.
MIA'S EXTRAORDINARY ADVENTURE (2022)
This is the inciting incident sequence of my original feature-length story. Fourteen-year-old girl Mia is in a theme park alone on her birthday. She suffers from happy memories of her parents at the same park when she was young. Now she's alone. When she decides to let the happy memories go, something strange happens to her.
Speaking of the summary of this feature-length story, this 14-year-old Mia is actually just a memory in her dream. Her heart is badly broken and traumatized by the relationship at this moment. Adult Mia(who is the real one) needs to look after her wounds from her past life. That is why Adult Mia tries to communicate with the 14-year-old girl Mia in her memory. The world tree in this story is the core neuron of her identity. The neuron's shape reminds me of a tree a lot, so I built the world based on it. It looks like an adventure fantasy genre, but the core theme is built up based on a psychological background.
But mainly, I just wanted to have a lot of fun making this sequence.

BAUDEOGI (50 Thumbnails Practice)
This is one of the feature-length story I'm personally working on.
Baudeogi is a historical real figure in Chosen dynasty. Since I knew about her story I was so interested in this female pioneer. She was the Namsadang troupe's first and last lead female performer, Kkokdusoe, and is the innovator of the current Anseong Namsadang. In the past, many tried to find the source of Korean pop culture and art from the Western culture. However, the current pop culture and art is deemed to have come from Korea's pop art, not from the West.
The Sadangpae performers are always at the center of such efforts to explore the source of Korean pop culture. And, Baudeogi, the only female Kkodusoe lead performer, represented the Sadangpae troupe. Thus, Baudeogi, who explored the country’s pop culture, is the innovator of Korean entertainment culture.

In Chosen dynasty, a performer is regarded as one of the lowest job classes. I started to build a story with <The Prince and the Pauper> by Mark Twain.  What if a poor performer looks identical to a princess who's sick of her royal family life? So in this sequence, the princess snuck out of the palace with her court lady to see the clown Baudeogi, when she heard that the clown looks literally identical to her. and the guards try to find the princess to get her back to the palace.
I tried to summarize the moment when they meet Baudeogi and princess Sohye, with rough thumbs in 50 panels. Working economically is the core sense of a feature story artist! I keep training it myself.
The Way Home (2023)
This is a webcomic I made for our dog, Cloud. I tried to recap his journey before he came to us.

WEEKEND GESTURE DRAWING
I have been hosting my previous coworkers from Electronic Arts and Mainframe Studios to weekend gesture drawing sessions since the Fall of 2020. We try to practice gesture drawing every Sunday morning and share our drawings as a weekly routine. Most of these drawings are drawn in 15 sec to 5 mins maximum. (of course, colouring/toning drawings took longer) Sometimes it is tricky to draw and chat at the same time but we just love talking about random topics and sharing our different cultures as well while we're drawing something together. Thanks to this drawing session, I feel that my shorthand quick sketch skills are improved greatly. I will probably keep running this small group drawing session! :)
FILM STUDY
<Indiana Jones Raiders of the Lost Ark> is one of my favorite films! This film is made in 1981 but I can be fully engaged with the characters and story. That's what a masterpiece defines. I studied one of the most well-known sequences of this movie for learning how the director keeps the tense and entertaining with actions and cinematography. I could see a lot of detailed decision-making by Steven Spielburg for conveying the story clearly. Also when I figured the core intention of each shot out for conveying the story better very meticulously, I just can't stop admiring the director's decision-making. I keep studying great sequences this way.
